Solar Panel Removal and Reinstallation: Process & Costs

In most cases, a solar energy system is a low-maintenance, cost-saving solution designed to last over 30 years. However, there are some occasional maintenance expenses to consider. One common reason for these costs is roof repair or replacement, which may require temporarily removing and reinstalling your solar panels.

The Process For Removing And Reinstalling Solar Panels

The solar panel removal process is straightforward.
Once you’ve selected a trained professional, they will come to your property to shut down the system and safely de-energize it. Then, they will remove the solar panels from your roof, along with the racking/mounting hardware and any wiring or other system components that are on the roof. This will be stripped down to a point where your property is safe while making the reinstallation as easy as possible.
Once the roof repair or replacement is complete, the solar installers will return (usually within two weeks, depending on weather and scheduling) to reinstall racking, wiring, and the solar panels. Your system will then be reenergized and recommissioned to ensure it is functioning properly before the reinstallation crew closes out the job.

How Long Does it Take to Remove and Reinstall Solar Panels?

The longer your system is de-energized, the more energy savings you’ll miss out on. That’s why it’s important to coordinate removing and reinstalling solar panels efficiently.

For most residential solar panel removal and reinstallation projects, expect the following timeline:

  • Day 1: System shutdown and removal of solar panels, racking, and wiring
  • Roofing work completion (timeline varies)
  • Day 2-3: Reinstall solar racking, wiring, and panels, then recommission the system

For commercial solar removal and reinstallation projects, the timeline varies based on system size and roof type:

  • 50 to 100 kW systems: 3-5 days for solar panel removal, 8-10 days for reinstallation and commissioning
  • Factors affecting the project duration: System size, roof type (metal roofs, flat roof, or shingles), and site conditions
